Publishing research
The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) not only expects but requires all publications by NIHR HRC funded and supported researchers to acknowledge the NIHR funding in full and include the NIHR disclaimer. The NIHR monitors these references to our HRC and uses them to measure our performance. Future funding for our NIHR HRC is therefore dependent on our success in this area.
This statement should be placed in the acknowledgement section of a publication. It is not sufficient to place the acknowledgement only in author’s affiliations.
Here is some guidance from the NIHR for different scenarios.
Scenario 1: Instances where the research received funding from the HRC:
Acknowledgement and disclaimer for NIHR research at the HRC:
“This study/research is funded/part-funded [delete as appropriate] by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) HealthTech Research Centre in Diagnostic and Technology Evaluation. Award no: NIHR205290.
The views expressed are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the NIHR or the Department of Health and Social Care.”
Please also acknowledge any other NIHR support the research may have received.
Scenario 2: Instances where the research was funded by another funder but delivered through the HRC:
Statement (including funder and disclaimer)
“[Research funder statement] This study has been delivered through the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) HealthTech Research Centre in Diagnostic and Technology Evaluation. Award no: NIHR205290.
The views expressed are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the [name of the research funder], the NIHR or the Department of Health and Social Care.”
Please also acknowledge any other NIHR support the research may have received, for example, through a research programme award.
Scenario 3: Minimum statement to be used in instances where there are funder details and/or word count restrictions AND the research was funded by another funder but delivered through the HRC
Acknowledgement only (for use within a broader set of acknowledgements/disclaimers)
“The research was carried out at the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) HealthTech Research Centre in Diagnostic and Technology Evaluation.Award no: NIHR205290.”
Scenario 4 – Part-funded roles:
If you are part-funded by the NIHR, please acknowledge this in the research paper.
For example:
“[researcher name] is part-funded by the NIHR in Diagnostic and Technology Evaluation. Award no: NIHR205290.”
It is vital that HRC funded and supported researchers let the HRC know when they are about to publish research. This information is treated in the strictest confidence but allows the core team to prepare and liaise with the NIHR, University and Hospitals Trust press teams in order to maximise coverage as soon as any press embargoes are lifted.
Please notify the HRC team of any planned publications and press releases through e-mail at: nihr.hrc-dxtecheval@newcastle.ac.uk
HRCs are required to notify NIHR in advance of any media activity, as soon as reasonably practicable and a minimum of three working days prior to any journalist outreach.
