The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) HealthTech Research Centre (HRC) in Diagnostic and Technology Evaluation is part of the NIHR and hosted by Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in partnership with Newcastle University.

In 2024 the NIHR awarded £42 million over five years to 14 HealthTech Research Centres (HRCs) across England. The HRCs are centres of expertise which drive life-changing research into health technologies. We also bring together patients, clinicians, researchers, commissioners and industry.
The NIHR HRC in Diagnostic and Technology Evaluation builds on our successful work as the former NIHR Diagnostics Evidence Co-operative (DEC) Newcastle and NIHR Newcastle In Vitro Diagnostics Co-operative (MIC). Since 2013, we have supported over 240 companies by helping them to obtain over £20M in external funding and to generate a portfolio of evidence as they bring their diagnostics to the UK healthcare market.
