NIHR i4i Connect Call 8 – Collaboration Opportunity
Collaborate with the NIHR Newcastle MIC and North East Innovation Lab on NIHR Invention for Innovation Connect funding.
The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Invention for Innovation (i4i) Programme is a scheme aimed at funding innovators who are developing medical devices, in vitro diagnostic devices and digital health technologies.
One of the funding streams within the i4i Programme is the i4i Connect. This two-stage competition typically runs once a year and provides small-to-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) registered in the UK with up to £150,000. The next i4i Connect call is due to launch on 16 January 2024.

The scheme aims to support SMEs for a 6-12 month period as they progress their innovations and apply for further funding, particularly the i4i Product Development Award. The SME’s innovation can be at any stage of development providing there is some proof-of-concept data.
How can the NIHR Newcastle MIC support you?
The NIHR Newcastle In Vitro Diagnostics Co-operative (Newcastle MIC) has a highly skilled team of methodologists who efficiently evaluate new in vitro diagnostics. We have previously helped SMEs successfully apply to this scheme and can support an application as either a co-applicant, collaborator or sub-contractor. For this competition, our support could include:
- Engaging with decision-makers and users to identify the best clinical use and patient population for your diagnostic.
- Health economics to explore the potential impact of your diagnostic on the healthcare system.
- Design and statistical analysis of lab validation or first-in-human studies.
We can also help to write the funding application and provide advice regarding project management and plans for patient and public involvement.
How can the North East Innovation Lab support you?
The North East Innovation Lab team includes life scientists, methodologists, and clinical research nurses. The team offer a range of specialist laboratory expertise including:
- Independent validation of laboratory tests, including assessment of analytical performance.
- Access to clinical samples through a Biobank; including stored materials and bespoke collections.
- Access to specialist laboratory space and equipment.
The NIHR Newcastle MIC and North East Innovation Lab work closely together to deliver high quality evidence for in vitro diagnostics.
If you are interested in applying to this scheme and collaborating with us, please get in touch by 16 January 2024.
This will allow us sufficient time to develop the application and associated costings with you.
