Our Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement Strategy
Our approach to Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) places the public at the centre of the HRC, closing the gap between health technology research and society’s health needs. We co-created our PPIE strategy in 2024 with our Insight Panel of public contributors aligning with the UK Standards for Public Involvement and NIHR Strategic Commitments for Public Partnerships.
The five strategic objectives for our PPIE are to:
1. Ensure our work is accessible, inclusive, and truly for society, involving public contributors in decision making in every layer of the organisation including governance.
2. Make it easy for a diverse range of public contributors to get involved, including underserved groups with unmet needs and the digitally excluded.
3. Better understand and measure the impact of our PPIE activity and how it is making a difference for the public.
4. Grow meaningful engagement for HRC research with a broad spectrum of the public, involving them in debate, dialogue, and feedback.
5. Maximise the relevance and impact of our research, working with partners from every sector of society, collaborating at a local, regional, and national level.
Our PPIE activities
To achieve our objectives, we will deliver a programme of PPIE activities that will focus on:
* Regular involvement of our Insight Panel of patients, public and carers to provide advice to individual research projects, and oversight of our PPIE structures.
* Community based activities to involve new people and communities in our work, including our Insight Panel.
* Actively reviewing our PPIE activity to continually reflect, learn from and develop our approach to involving and engaging with the public.
* Developing new ways to capture our PPIE activity, and the impact of PPIE on our research.
* Working with others at local, regional, and national levels, including HealthTech Research Centres (HRCs) across the country, to share learning and maximise opportunities to involve the public in diagnostic and Health Technology research.
This strategy has been developed alongside our Research Inclusion strategy. We believe that effective PPIE, with diverse public perspectives, can support Research Inclusion. We will use learning and connections developed through our PPIE activity to help grow the inclusivity of all our activity.
We will share progress updates with our HRC community through newsletters, social media, and our website.
